             abstract = "The main goal of this research was to simulate land use change in 
                         the city of Rio Claro (SP), using remote sensing, geographic 
                         information systems, and a cellular automata model for the time 
                         span extending from 1995 to 2006. Initially, an orthophoto mosaic 
                         at a 1:10 000 scale was used for generating a cadastral map of the 
                         analyzed town. Information on land use was directly vectorized 
                         over this cadastral map based on the available local zoning 
                         regulations. The methodological procedures for modeling land use 
                         change were twofold: i) the first one referring to the 
                         pre-processing of data used to drive the dynamic modeling platform 
                         (Dinamica EGO), and ii) the second one consisting of the modeling 
                         experiment itself, comprising exploratory analysis, 
                         parameterization, calibration, simulation, and validation. This 
                         work presents preliminary results on the generated land use change 
                         simulations executed for the given time period. The achieved 
                         results demonstrate the suitability of the employed methodology 
                         for simulating processes of land use change both at the 
                         intra-urban level as well as in the surroundings of the town under 
                         analysis. It should be highlighted the crucial importance of the 
                         selection of land use change drivers for the full success of the 
                         model.",
